Dalam perjalanan hidup ini seringkali kita merasa kecewa. Kecewa sekali. Sesuatu yang luput dari genggaman, keinginan yang tidak tercapai, kenyataan yang tidak sesuai harapan. Akhirnya angan ini lelah berandai-andai ria. Sungguh semua itu telah hadirkan nelangsa yang begitu menggelora dalam jiwa.

Dan sungguh sangat beruntung andai dalam saat-saat tergoncangnya jiwa, masih ada setitik cahaya dalam kalbu untuk merenungi kebenaran. Masih ada kekuatan untuk melangkahkan kaki menuju majlis-majlis ilmu, majlis-majlis dzikir yang akan mengantarkan pada ketenteraman jiwa.

Hidup ini ibarat belantara. Tempat kita mengejar pelbagai keinginan. Dan memang manusia diciptakan mempunyai kehendak, mempunyai keinginan. Tetapi tidak setiap yang kita inginkan bisa terbukti, tidak setiap yang kita mahu bisa tercapai. Dan tidak mudah menyedari bahawa apa yang bukan menjadi hak kita tidak perlu kita tangisi. Banyak orang yang tidak sedar bahwa hidup ini tidak punya hanya satu hukum: harus sukses, harus bahagia atau harus-harus yang lain.

Betapa banyak orang yang sukses tetapi lupa bahwa asalnya itu semua pemberian Allah hingga membuatnya sombong dan bertindak sewenang-wenang. Begitu juga kegagalan sering tidak dihadapi dengan benar. Padahal dimensi tauhid dari kegagalan adalah tidak tercapainya apa yang memang bukan hak kita. Padahal hakikat kegagalan adalah tidak terengkuhnya apa yang memang bukan hak kita.

Apa yang memang menjadi jatah kita di dunia, samada ianya rezeki, jabatan atau kedudukan, pasti akan Allah sampaikan. Tetapi apa yang memang bukan milik kita, ia tidak akan kita bisa miliki. Meski ia nyaris menghampiri kita, meski kita mati-matian mengusahakannya.

"Tiada suatu bencana pun yang menimpa di bumi dan (tidak pula) pada dirimu sendiri melainkan telah tertulis dalam kitab (Lauh Mahfuzh) sebelum Kami menciptakannya. Sesungguhnya yang demikian itu adalah mudah bagi Allah. (Kami jelaskan yang demikian itu) supaya kamu jangan berdukacita terhadap apa yang luput dari kamu, dan supaya kamu jangan terlalu gembira terhadap apa yang diberikan-Nya kepadamu. Dan Allah tidak menyukai setiap orang yang sombong lagi membanggakan diri.." (al-Hadiid: 22-23)

Demikian juga bagi yang sedang galau terhadap jodoh. Kadang kita tidak sedar kita memaksa Allah tentang jodoh kita, bukannya meminta yang terbaik dalam istikharah kita tetapi benar-benar memaksa Allah: "Pokoknya harus dia Ya Allah! Harus dia, kerana aku sangat mencintainya." Seakan kita jadi yang menentukan segalanya, kita meminta dengan paksa. Dan akhirnya kalau pun Allah memberikannya maka tak selalu itu yang terbaik. Boleh jadi Allah tidak menghulurkannya dengan kelembutan, tapi melemparkannya dengan marah karena niat kita yang terkotori.

Maka wahai jiwa yang sedang gundah, dengarkan ini dari Allah: "Boleh jadi kamu membenci sesuatu, padahal ia amat baik bagi kamu. Dan boleh jadi kamu mencintai sesuatu, padahal ia amat buruk bagi kamu. Allah Maha mengetahui sedangkan kamu tidak mengetahui." (al-Baqarah: 216) Maka setelah ini wahai jiwa, jangan kau hanyut dalam nestapa jiwa berpanjangan terhadap apa-apa yang luput darimu. Setelah ini harus benar-benar difikirkan bahwa apa-apa yang kita rasa perlu di dunia ini harus benar-benar perlu, bila ada relevannya dengan harapan kita akan bahagia di akhirat. Karena seorang Mu’min tidak hidup untuk dunia, tetapi menjadikan dunia untuk mencari hidup yang sesungguhnya: hidup di akhirat
kelak. Maka sudahlah, jangan kau tangisi apa yang bukan milikmu!

that we can only plan for what we want, but Allah decides what we need.

Primary and secondary school years were when we ponder on possibilites, dreams, 'cita-cita.' Those years were wonderful 'cause anything was possible, we weren't bounded by any boundaries nor limitations.

But as we go into college and university, we had to learn to adapt our dreams to current circumstances. Some were able to hold on to their dreams, for others, its a time to console oneself knowing it wasn't ment to be. It was hard to erase a dream I once hold dear and take in another, to tell myself that all that happens in life is for the better when deep inside I felt...sad.

It has been 6 years since I let go of a hope and embracing another. I still look back at my old dream, my old friend, from time to time, thinking what could have been. I still ask myself, was the sacrifice worthwhile?.

Without actually realising it, another phase of my life has gone by. Pejam celik pejam celik, I'm now a university graduate. The path has been long but short, strenuous but worthwhile. Three and a half years have passed since we began at a crossroad, here we are again at another junction on this footpath we call life. Yet another fork where have to go our separate ways, pursue our own destiny and expectations.

Alhamdulillah, my result was beyond anything I could ever have imagined. I'm totally gratefull to Allah for all the blessings he has given me, and helped me to reaffirm my belief that everything that happens in life is for the better. The best lesson I've learned from my student years wasn't Fourier transforms or pole-zero plots, nor was it Ohm's Law or transfer functions. Its 'usaha', 'tawakkal' and 'redha.' It's always in that order. It's Sunnatullah.

To those who will be graduating this dec/april, my heartwarm congratulations to you. To those who have a few sems to go, all the best and I pray Allah mempermudahkan segala urusan. The journey is shorter than you think, no matter how daunting it may seem, trust me.

Took the time to do a personality test a few moments ago. Discovered that my personality can be categorized as "Sanguine Choleric." When I read the description, it sure doesn't sound like me, heh. Take the test here

Internet Searching Increases Brain Function, Says Study

WASHINGTON (Bernama) -- A new study by U.S. scientists revealed that for computer-savvy middle-aged and older adults, searching the Internet triggers key centers in the brain that control decision-making and complex reasoning. The findings, China's XINHUA news agency reported, demonstrated that Web search activities may help stimulate and possibly improve brain function. The study, the first of its kind to assess the impact of Internet searching on brain performance, will appear in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry.

"The study results are encouraging, that emerging computerized technologies may have physiological effects and potential benefits for middle-aged and older adults."

"Internet searching engages complicated brain activity, which may help exercise and improve brain function," said principal investigator Gary Small, a professor from University of California, Los Angeles.

As the brain ages, a number of structural and functional changes occur, including atrophy, reductions in cell activity, and increases in deposits of amyloid plaques and tau tangles, which can impact cognitive function.

Small noted that pursuing activities that keep the mind engaged may help preserve brain health and cognitive ability.

Traditionally, these include games such as crossword puzzles, but with the advent of technology, scientists are beginning to assess the influence of computer use -- including the Internet.

For the study, the UCLA team worked with 24 neurologically normal research volunteers aged between 55 and 76. Half of the participants had experience searching the Internet, while the other half had no such experience.

Internet searches revealed a major difference between the two groups.

While all participants demonstrated the same brain activity that was seen during the book-reading task, the Web-savvy group also registered activity in the frontal, temporal and cingulate areas of the brain, which control decision-making and complex reasoning.

"Our most striking finding was that Internet searching appears to engage a greater extent of neural circuitry that is not activated during reading -- but only in those with prior Internet experience," said Small.

In fact, researchers found that during Web searching, volunteers with prior experience registered a twofold increase in brain activation when compared with those with little Internet experience.

The tiniest measurable unit of brain activity is called a voxel.

Scientists discovered that during Internet searching, those with prior experience sparked 21,782 voxels, compared with only 8,646 voxels for those with less experience.

Compared with simple reading, the Internet's wealth of choices requires that people make decisions about what to click on to pursue more information, an activity that engages important cognitive circuits in the brain.

Am I reading this right? Did this actually happen or did Datuk Ali Rustam pull a quick one?. Read the reason why the Melaka head minister saw it fitting to give Shah Rukh Khan the title Datuk:

“Kalau kita hendak buat promosi Melaka secara sendiri melalui sesuatu filem yang ditonton jutaan orang di seluruh dunia tentu kosnya bernilai beratus juta ringgit. Melaka mempunyai banyak tempat pelancongan menarik seperti Sungai Melaka, Menara Taming Sari, Eye On Melaka dan tempat-tempat bersejarah yang menarik untuk filem seperti filem Hindustan. Kawasan lain di dunia pernah ditonton oleh orang ramai tetapi Melaka belum ditunjukkan secara menyeluruh.” -utusan.com.my 12 Oct 2008

This is the most stupidest reason I have ever heard. DOGOL!!! A few faults in this reasoning:

1. Why are we depending on a foreigner to promote Malaysia? Don't we have the pride to do that ourself? Are we so dependent on them that we can't even tell other people about all the beautiful things Malaysia has to offer on our own?

2. How can you expect the Malaysian people to support the local art scene (films, drama, music,etc) when our own government prefer foreign (read:hindustani) movies?

I have nothing against SRK, he didn't ask for this and its definitely not his fault if a short minded minister wants to give him a title. But come on la, even Peter Jackson, the director of the Lord of the Rings Triology, wasn't knighted by New Zealand just because he put some shots of NZ in the movie. Eizlan Yusof was not knighted for promoting NZ in Dari KL Ke Queenstown. But here we are, giving a datukship to SRK for putting a 30sec dancing scene at A Famosa in One Two Ka Four. DOGOL!!!

Ramadhan Premier League

An EPL football match is always amazing to watch. With Ronaldo with his dribbling skills, Drogba with his shooting accuracy, the consistent and amazing performance from the ManU team, the tight formation of the Chelsea team, the young brilliance of the Arsenal team, the list goes on. Unfortunately, the only we can do is watch or to a greater extent play Fantasy Football on yahoo, that's about it.

There's another League that doesn't quite have the same spotlight as the EPL, the same glamorous advertisements on tv, or have any merchandise or jerseys related to it. But this League has more that 1.5 million players, a fifth of the world population. All of us are obliged to take part.The matches in this League are 12 hours long and are not constrained to a 90 by 120 m field, nor is it limited to 11-man teams. This League takes exactly a month to complete. This League is far bigger than the EPL, FIFA, Tri-nations, Wimbledon Cup, Sudirman Cup, even the BERSATU games. This League is the Ramadhan Premier League (RPL).

RPL only has two teams. On one side there's the MyTeam. On the other, the RedDevils.

MyTeam are the true heroes of the RPL. They are headstrong, their believes are true and well tested. History have proven that MyTeam has immense potential to win. The win in the Badr final, the win in the Constantinople Opens., to name but a few. But MyTeam will not be complacent, no no no, they can't be complacent, lest they forget their loss in the Uhud finals. MyTeam will go into this season of the RPL with a new resolve, a new strategy.

The RedDevils. The team that reeks with foul play. Angered by the fact that they will soon be fired by their manager because of their disobedience, they want MyTeam to be fired too. History have proven that the RedDevils cannot be relied upon for sportsmanship and fair play. Even though most of their players have their hands tied behind their back, they have a presistent, well skilled striker, Desiry Nafsis. Desiry Nafsis plays dirty and is well known for his wild and out of control antiques during matches. He will do all he can to attract, to lure, to trap the MyTeam players in RedDevils tempo and style of play. If this were to happen, MyTeam will sure lose.

RPL is here once more. This time around the winner will win the prestigous, much sought, most hyped, Taqwa Cup. The value of the Taqwa Cup is immense. The manager of MyTeam has agreed to give a most generous, beyong imagining gift should they win the Taqwa Cup.

The RedDevils resented this. They are determined to snatch the Taqwa Cup from MyTeam. They don't care that the Taqwa Cup has no value to them. For all they care, the Taqwa Cup is just a piece of trash. As long as MyTeam does not obtain the cup, it matters not.

The match will be intense. Yes, there will be injuries. Yes, it will be an uphill battle. But we are strong, we have the capabilities. RedDevils' Desiry Nafsis will be a force to be reckoned with. He will perform one harsh tackle after one harsh tackle, one strike after one strike, but we will attack, we will defend, we will dodge each and everyone of them!

MyTeam, we need to win, we have to win. Put the determination in your heart. Strengthen your belief. Increase and be persistent in your amal. Make it your business in making this Ramadhan far better than the last!

The Petronas Interview in Auckland has come and gone. My case study was about privacy and popularity and the scenario that was given to me was about these 2 young student trainees at my office. I can't remember the details of the scenario nor the answer i gave for the case study. The only thing I can remember was feeling a tad disappointed, why i felt disappointed i can't remember. What's done is done and all I can do now is to leave it to Him. On the plus side, I received the 2008 Vice President award for my last year's academic results. 21 out of 56 interviewees received the award, 3 of which are Canterburians. Though I am grateful, I believe such token of acknowledgements only serves as a memorabilia of what one has achieved but holds no bearing to one's true capabilities. What you are capable of achieving today, tomorrow, and years to come are outcomes of your efforts right now. Your past is not your potential.

Another significant milestone is with regard to my FYP. After a long, torturing, tormenting 4 months, my FYP is finally at a desirable stage with all of the designing and lab measurements completed. It's a relief. At one stage I wanted to give up, feeling utterly hopeless because the project was going nowhere. I was always on my supervisor's moody side and every meeting ended with him red-faced and me feeling useless. I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel and let go a sigh of relief. No time for celebrations though as I still have mountains of assignments countless number of things to crawl through.

Entre 40K Challenge Qualifier

I've always wanted to join the Entre Challenge ever since I heard about it during my 2nd year at Canter. My first attempt was the Napkin challenge last year. Even though I didn't win, the feedback I received was positive and it somehow encourages me to try again the following year. And so I did. What started as a management assignment became the ticket for team Insan Design to go to the final round of this year's Entre's 40K challenge. With Selo, Bob, and Hanaa on board, this proves to be an exciting endeavour that I can't wait to dive in to!!! GAMBATTEE team Insan!!

This semester will be jam-packed as the end of my journey slowly comes into focus. A moment where "belajar kata pegi, kerja kata mari", or "gradually losing interest to study". It's a transition aye, heh. I can't help but feeling sad on so many levels. What I'm sad about I can't really describe.

I have a lot of hopes for the future. Dreams to achieve, promises to keep, desires to be accomplished. For the time being though, I want to live in the present and savour every moment, occasionally accompanied by this nice song by Andra and the Backbones, hehe. The Power of Negative Thinking (by Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott)

Most negative people feel they could be positive if they had a different job, lived in a better place, or were in a great relationship. But happiness does not hinge on better circumstances. A person with bad attitudes will still be a person with a bad attitudes, wherever and with whomever he or she lives. By force of habit, each of us is either basically positive or basically negative. Our circumstances change with the weather, but our attitudes are the same. The negative person defends his attitudes with the rationale of being realistic, while the positive person looks beyond the current state of affairs and sees people and situations in terms of possibilities.

Negative interpretations are guaranteed to sap the happiness out of a relationship. But how do we cultivate positive attitudes when our spouses do something we dislike? The answer lies in taking responsibility for our own feelings.

I remember coming home one day flushed with excitement and eager to discuss some good news with Les. I can't remember the news now, but I remember his response: lukewarm enthusiasm. I wanted him to share my excitement, but for whatever reason, he didn't. "You upset me," I later told him. But the truth is, he didn't upset me. I upset myself. That sounds a little strange, but it's true. Before exploring why Les didn't join in my celebration, I jumped to a negative conclusion: He doesn't even care that something good happened to me. He is only interested in himself. Since that time, both of us have tried to adopt a "no fault, no blame" attitude. The idea is to suspend our negative evaluations about each other and remember that no one can make another person unhappy. Everyone is responsible for his or her own attitude.

Victor Frankl, more than anyone else, exemplified the human ability to rise above circumstances and maintain a positive attitude. He was a twenty-six year old Jewish psychiatrist in Vienna, Austria, when he was arrested by Hitler's Gestapo and placed in a concentration camp. Month in and month out, he worked under the great smokestacks that belched out black carbon monoxide from the incinerators where his father, mother, sister, and wife had been cremated. When Victor Frankl was finally called for inquisition, he stood naked in the center of a powerful white light while men in shiny boots strode to and fro assailing him with questions and accusations. Already they had taken his wife,his family, his writing, his clothes, his wedding ring, and everything else of material value. But in the midst of this barrage of questions, an idea flashed across Frankl's mind: They have taken from me everything I have - except the power to choose my own attitude.

Thankfully, most people are not required to cope with such devastating circumstances as the Jews faced in Nazi Germany. But the same principle that helped Victor Frankl survive the death camps - choosing his own attitude - applies to every difficult circumstance, wherever and whenever it occurs.

Millions of couples are robbed of happiness because one of the partners has developed a negative mindset, blaming their unhappiness on things their spouse does or doesn't do. It's one of the worst mistakes a person can make in a relationship. We often hear statement in marriage counseling like, "Her comments hurt me!' or "He makes me so angry." In reality, remarks and comments do not hurt or upset people; people can only upset themselves. Of course, being upset is a natural reaction to something we dislike, but that reaction can serve as a trigger for a more constructive, positive response.

Agama Bukan Candu Untuk Mengkhayalkan Orang Miskin

“Dan berikanlah kepada kaum keluargamu, dan orang miskin serta orang musafir akan haknya masing-masing; dan janganlah engkau membazir dengan pembaziran yang melampau. Sesungguhnya orang-orang yang membazir itu adalah saudara-saudara syaitan, sedang syaitan itu pula sangat kufur kepada Tuhannya”. (Surah al-Isra: 26-27).

Saya tertarik apabila membaca membaca kisah al-Imam al-Nawawi (631-676H) yang diminta oleh Raja pada zamannya al-Malik al-Zahir untuk memberikan fatwa bagi mengharuskan Raja mengambil harta rakyat untuk digunakan memerangi musuh yang mengancam negara iaitu tentera Tatar. Tujuan itu pada zahirnya baik kerana mempertahankan negara dari ancaman musuh. Harta itu pun hendak digunakan untuk keperluan jihad.

Namun ramai ulama yang telah dibunuh ketika itu kerana enggan mengeluarkan fatwa berkenaan. Al-Nawawi juga enggan menulis surat sokongan terhadap tindakan Raja Zahir itu sekalipun beliau tahu pengambilan harta itu untuk kepentingan negara juga.

Apabila Raja bertanya kepada beliau mengapa beliau enggan menyokong? Beliau menjawab: Setahu saya engkau dahulunya seorang hamba, tidak mempunyai harta. Kemudian Allah memberikan kurniaan kepadamu lalu diangkat engkau menjadi seorang raja. Aku dengar engkau memiliki seribu hamba lelaki yang setiap mereka memiliki talipinggang daripada emas. Engkau juga ada memiliki dua ratus hamba perempuan, dan setiap mereka memiliki sebekas perhiasan. Jika engkau belanjakan itu semua, sehingga hamba-hamba lelakimu hanya memakai tali pinggang kain, dan hamba-hamha perempuanmu hanya memakai baju tanpa perhiasan, juga baitul mal sudah tiada simpanan wang, harta dan tanah lagi, maka aku akan fatwakan untukmu keharusan mengambil harta rakyat itu. Sesungguhnya yang menolong jihad dan selainnya ialah penyerahan diri kepada Allah dan mengikut jalan nabiNya s.a.w. (lihat: ‘Abd al-Ghani al-Daqar, al-Imam al-Nawawi, 144-145, Damsyik: Dar al-Qalam).

Saya suka dengan jawapan al-Imam al-Nawawi ini. Saya tahu, selepas ini banyak forum-forum perdana, ceramah-ceramah di radio dan televesyen akan memperkatakan tentang kewajipan berjimat cermat. Maka ustaz, ustazah dan penceramah pun –atas pemintaan penaja yang membayar harga ceramah- akan bersungguh-sungguh menyuruh orang-orang bawahan untuk berjimat cermat.

Dalil-dalil pun akan dibaca. Mungkin akan ada ustazah yang mencari cerita-cerita ajaib yang baru untuk dikaitkan dengan bab jimat cermat dan jangan membazir. Mungkin akan ada penceramah yang cuba menangis-menangis –seperti seorang pelakon berjaya yang menerima anugerah- bercerita kepada mak cik-makcik yang kusyuk menonton tentang azab seorang yang membazir ‘nasi lemaknya’.

Datanglah orang-orang kampung mendengar forum perdana dengan basikal atau motosikal sebagai menyahut seruan agar tidak membazir petrol. Adapun penceramah, datuk-datuk pengajur, YB-YB hanya menggunakan kenderaan mewah yang berkapasiti atas daripada 2000cc. Tujuannya untuk mengelakkan pembaziran wang kerajaan yang terpaksa dibayar kepada empunya kenderaan 2000cc ke bawah, lebih tinggi daripada 2000 ke atas.

Maka insaflah mak cik dan pak cik yang barangkali teringatkan tulang ikan yang pernah dibuangnya padahal masih ada sedikit sisa isinya yang melekat. Itulah membazir namanya. Maka, atas keinsafan dan taubat itu, mungkin ada yang akan mula mengurangkan makan nasi lemak daripada sebungkus seorang kepada sebungkus yang dikongsi bersama. Air kopinya yang memang sudah ‘ceroi’ akan ditukar kepada yang warna hitamnya antara kelihatan dan tidak. Maka selamat negara kita ini, disebabkan pakcik dan makcik, pak long dan mak long, pak lang dan mak lang di kampung sudah mengubah gaya hidup mereka.

Jika saya hadir ke forum yang seperti itu, saya ingin bertanya soalan, tapi soalan yang belum ‘dijakimkan’, “apakah agama ini dihantar oleh Allah untuk menghukum manusia bawahan dan menghalalkan yang lain tidur dalam kekenyangan dan kemewahan?”. Sebelum harga minyak naik, telah sekian mereka yang berada di teratak usang itu menjimat makan dan pakai. Saban hari mereka mengira belanja untuk memboleh mereka terus hidup di kala negara dunia belum menghadapi krisis harga minyak.

Saya tidak mahu membicarakan tentang kenaikan harga minyak dari sudut perjalanan ekonomi antarabangsa. Telah banyak pakar-pakarnya bicarakan. Tapi saya ingin bincangkan tentang soal pembaziran dan jimat-cermat. Ya, memang Islam memusuhi pembaziran. Bahkan al-Quran tidak pernah mempersaudarakan antara mana-mana pembuat dosa dengan syaitan, melainkan mereka yang membazirkan.

Allah menyebut dalam al-Quran: (maksudnya): “Dan berikanlah kepada kaum keluargamu, dan orang miskin serta orang musafir akan haknya masing-masing; dan janganlah engkau membazir dengan pembaziran yang melampau. Sesungguhnya orang-orang yang membazir itu adalah saudara-saudara syaitan, sedang syaitan itu pula sangat kufur kepada Tuhannya”. (Surah al-Isra: 26-27).

Demikianlah Allah persaudarakan pembazir dengan syaitan. Kesan pembaziran sangat besar. Lihat negara kita yang kaya dengan berbagai hasil. Sepatutnya kita akan tetap kukuh dan setiap rakyat akan menikmati kekayaan ini dengan adilnya. Namun, disebabkan pembaziran, harta negara yang sepatutnya dapat dimakan puluhan tahun, tetapi surut mendadak dalam masa beberapa tahun.

Maka, yang patut mendapat bantuan dan hak, tidak cukup untuk sampai kepadanya. Barang keperluan pula bertukar menjadi mahal. Pembaziran memusnahkan kehidupan rakyat bawahan dan menghalang hak yang sepatutnya sampai kepada mereka. Maka betapa wajar untuk para pembazir itu dipersaudarakan dengan syaitan. Apatah lagi dalam banyak keadaan, pembaziran itu lahir dari keangkuhan dan kesombongan. Sifat-sifat itulah jua yang menjadi asas kepada kekufuran syaitan.

Soalannya, mengapakah apabila kita membicarakan tentang pembaziran, kita hanya terbayang orang-orang bawahan di kampung ataupun bandar. Jika kita ingin meminta supaya setiap warga negara ini berjimat dan jangan membazir, maka bermulalah daripada atas. Bukan sekadar untuk ‘mengenakan si miskin yang sekian lama telah berjimat dan sudah tidak tahu apa yang hendak dijimatkan lagi. Mengapa kita hanya terbayang rakyat yang berada dalam rumah persendirian dan berbelanja dengan wang poketnya yang sudah lelah?

Kita sepatutnya terlebih meneliti semula bagaimana perbelanjaan yang menggunakan harta negara dan rakyat yang sedang berjalan di istana-istana, kediaman-kediaman rasmi kerajaan di peringkat negara dan negeri?. Apakah wajar di kala ini keraian untuk orang-orang besar sama ada sultan atau menteri begitu mewah? Makanan yang dihidangkan untuk mereka, harga satu meja kadang-kala boleh dimakan oleh ratusan rakyat bawahan. Karpet yang dipijak oleh mereka harganya ribuan bungkusan nasi yang dimakan oleh ‘orang biasa’.

Apakah patut di saat yang sebegini, ada istana atau kediaman rasmi menteri yang hendak ditambahmewahkan? Apakah patut orang-orang besar ini diraikan dengan hiburan atau pertunjukan dan konsert yang menelan puluhan ribu ringgit sempena sesuatu kunjungan mereka. Wang itu, wang negara. Wang itu, wang rakyat.

Apakah dalam masa yang sebegini mereka masih mendapat peruntukan untuk bersantai, bermain golf dan ‘berhiburan’ dengan menggunakan wang rakyat bawahan yang disuruh menjimatkan nasi lemak dan air kopi mereka?. Pembaziran sebegini lebih rapat menjadi saudara syaitan dibanding wang persendirian yang dibelanjakan.

Meminjam falsafah al-Imam al-Nawawi yang saya sebutkan tadi, jika orang atasan telah benar-benar berjimat, maka wajarlah untuk dikurangkan subsidi rakyat. Al-Nawawi telah dibuang negeri kerana enggan bersekongkol dengan perkara yang seperti ini. Namun, jika itu tidak dilakukan, ulama bukan burung kakak tua.

Saya mengambil risiko menulis hal ini. Tanggungjawab di hadapan Allah lebih besar daripada segala-galanya. Para ulama dahulu jauh lebih mulia, tidak dibandingkan kedaifan saya ini. Pun mereka telah menunaikan tanggungjawab al-Amr bil Ma’ruf dan al-An-Nahy ‘an al-Munkar ini. Semoga Allah menimbang tinta para ulama dengan darah para syuhada.

Telah berlaku tahun kesusahan dan kelaparan yang amat sangat di Semenanjung Arab pada zaman Amirul Mukminin ‘Umar bin al-Khattab. Dikenali dengan ‘Am al-Ramadah kerana seakan bagaikan warna ramad atau abu disebabkan kekurangan hujan, warna tanah dan warna kulit manusia yang bertukar disebabkan kekeringan. Ini berlaku pada antara tahun 17H dan 18H selama sembilan bulan.

Amirul Mukminin telah berhempas pulas menguruskan harta negara ketika itu bagi mengatasi kesusahan rakyat. Di samping kecemerlangan pengurusan, yang ingin disebutkan di sini kecemerlangan pendirian dan sikap. Ibn Jarir al-Tabari meriwayatkan bahawa ‘Umar bin al-Khattab tidak memakan pada tahun berkenaan lemak haiwan, susu dan daging sehingga orang ramai dapat memakannya. Barangan makanan berkurangan di pasar.

Pada suatu hari pekerjanya dapat membeli untuknya lemak dan susu namun dengan harga yang agak tinggi. ‘Umar enggan makan bahkan berkata: “Engkau telah menyebabkan lemak dan susu menjadi mahal, sedekahkan keduanya, aku bencikan pembaziran. Bagaimana aku dapat memahami keadaan rakyat jika tidak mengenaiku apa yang mengenai mereka?”. (Al-Tabari, 2/358, Beirut: Dar al-Fikr).

Juga diriwayatkan bahawa suatu hari pada tahun berkenaan disembelih unta lalu dimasak dan dibahagikan kepada orang ramai. Lalu diceduk masakan itu untuk dihidangkan juga buat ‘Umar. Tiba-tiba yang diceduk itu bahagian belakang unta dan hatinya. Lalu ‘Umar bertanya: “Dari mana diperolehi ini?”. Daripada unta yang kita sembelih hari ini. Kata ‘Umar: “Oh! Alangkah buruknya aku ini sebagai pemimpin, jika aku memakan bahagiannya yang baik lalu aku berikan rakyat makan yang sisa” (Ibn Sa’d, al-Tabaqat al-Kubra, 3/312, Beirut: Dar Sadir).

Maka alangkah buruknya seorang presiden, atau sultan, atau raja, atau perdana menteri, atau menteri besar, atau menteri yang makan dengan mewah daripada peruntukan harta negara atau negeri sedangkan rakyatnya dalam kesusahan. Ketika rakyat membilang butiran beras, helaian ringgit untuk persekolahan anak, keperitan membayar sewa rumah, api dan air, sementara mereka yang berkuasa ini pula menghadiri jamuan negara dan negeri itu dan ini.

Bermewahan dengan pertunjukan dan hiburan dari peruntukan wang negara. Kemudian bercuti rehat, tanpa rakyat ketahui apakah kepenatannya untuk rakyat. Kos cuti itu pula ditanggung oleh negara tanpa sebarang pulangan keuntungan buat rakyat. Alangkah zalim! Alangkah keji sikap yang sedemikian rupa.

Saya kadang-kala begitu hairan apabila seseorang dianggap ‘berjiwa rakyat’, hanya kerana makan nasi yang dijamu oleh rakyat, atau masuk ke kampung mendukung anak rakyat untuk beberapa minit bagi membolehkan wartawan mengambil foto. Apakah itu dinamakan berjiwa rakyat?

Jika hendak diiktiraf sebagai berjiwa rakyat, rasailah apa yang rakyat rasai. Orang seperti ‘Umar bin al-Khattab lebih mulia daripada segala keturunan atau pangkat yang ada di kalangan manusia. Kemuliaannya telah diiktiraf oleh Allah dan RasulNya. Dia ahli syurga dengan jaminan Allah dan RasulNya sementara politiknya tidak ada saingan yang menggugatnya. Namun tetap amanah dan jujurnya terhadap rakyatnya. Merasai penderitaan rakyat. Beliau idola kepimpinan kita sepatutnya. Walaupun beliau tidak pernah menyuruh orang menyembah atau menjulangnya, namun beliau dipuja oleh sejarah dan diangkat oleh Allah.

Kenaikan harga minyak menaikkan harga barang. Orang berpendapatan rendah menjadi mangsa. Agama berperanan untuk menyedarkan semua pihak tentang tanggungjawab terhadap rakyat. Dalam keadaan begini, antara perkara pertama yang patut dibentang kepada rakyat adalah pengurusan kemasukan dan pengagihan zakat. Zakat yang mungkin sampai kepada peringkat bilion ringgit di seluruh negara mesti diagihkan secara telus dan bijaksana.

Mengapa masih ada fakir miskin yang bagaikan meminta sedekat kepada pihak yang menguruskan zakat? Mengapa program tv lebih menjumpai si miskin dibanding pihak yang menguruskan zakat? Mengapa zakat masih berbaki dengan begitu banyak setiap tahun sedangkan kemiskinan masih banyak? Mengapa pihak yang menguruskan zakat kelihatan bertambah mewah, sementara yang patut menerima hak kelihatannya bertambah letih dengan keadaan sekarang?

Di masa inilah peranan zakat bagi memastikan setiap yang memerlukan memperolehinya tanpa kerenah birokrasi yang bukan-bukan. Jangan sampai untuk mendapat RM150 si miskin berulang alik berkali-kali dengan tambang sendiri, sementara yang mendakwa amil zakat mengisi minyak kereta dengan wang zakat atas nama amil! Ramai kata kita berjaya menguruskan zakat sebab kutipan yang tinggi. Saya katakan, pengurusan yang berjaya itu bukan sahaja kutipan semata, tetapi juga pengagihan secara telus, bijaksana dan bertanggungjawab.

Dalam usaha kerajaan menangani kemelut ekonomi hari ini, perkara-perkara yang disebutkan ini mestilah dipandang serius. Kejayaan sesebuah kerajaan menghayati penderitaan rakyat akan menjadikan mereka lebih disayangi dan disokong. Jika orang atas mengubah cara hidup, kita akan berkempen untuk semua agar mengubah cara hidup. Jika orang agama disuruh berkempen orang bawahan agar mengubah cara hidup, sementara melupai yang di atas, mereka sebenarnya cuba menjadikan agama sebagai candu agar seseorang melupai masalah yang sebenar.

It's all in the mind

The first thing you have to do is make sure that you are going in with the right attitude. It may seem natural to be frightened about a job interview, but you just need to change the way you are thinking about it. Many people spend hours thinking about all the things that could go wrong, and then - not surprisingly - they do. Instead of thinking of an interview as a test where your potential employer is trying to trip you up, think of it instead as a chance to show off what you know and what you can do. This is your chance to prove yourself far better than a letter or a CV can ever do; think of it as a game or a performance.

Also, remember that the situation is not just about an employer interviewing you for a position - you are also interviewing them to see if the company is one that you would be happy being part of. If you believe this, you'll project the attitude of someone who has a lot of job offers to choose from, and is not just desperate to take the first offer that comes her way.

Positive thinking gurus such as Anthony Robbins recommend doing a ‘visualisation' before going for an interview. Spend the evening before quietly picturing the interview going well in your head, like a movie. See yourself giving firm handshakes, hear yourself giving intelligent answers and feel yourself being relaxed and confident.

Preparation is vital

Like any test, you should prepare for a job interview ahead of time. Think about what the employer will want to know, and have some good answers ready. Employers want people who are motivated and positive, so make sure that any answer you give reflects these qualities. Although every interview is different, there are stock questions that always come up, and having an answer at your fingertips will make you more confident, and impress the interviewer. Take the time to think about a few scenarios where you have excelled yourself in the past, solved a difficult problem or made a real difference to your company; interviewers will often ask for examples of these and they can be hard to remember on the spur of the moment.

Another popular question is asking your weaknesses or faults; the savvy interviewee will know how to turn these negatives into a positive, admitting a weakness that can also be viewed as a strength. Explaining you have difficulties delegating, pay too much attention to detail or always feel the need to be challenged are good answers. The trick with answering negative questions about previous mistakes or failed jobs is to explain how you learnt from the experience and are now a better worker because of it. Practice one or two with a friend.

Employers are also looking for someone who has the skills that the job entails, rather than having to train someone from scratch. Research the company thoroughly, as “what do you know about us?” is another popular question, and “nothing” is not an acceptable answer. Look on their Website, ask around, read the newspapers. Think about what the company and the position needs, and prepare your skills so that they fit the picture. The job advertisement should also give you some clues as to what they are looking for. First impressions count

Know exactly where you are going and the name of who you will be meeting and speaking to when you get there. Although it may seem like common sense to arrive on time, always give yourself a good 15 minutes extra; this is not a day you want to get caught in a traffic jam and arrive flustered. Also, this gives you time to fill out an application form neatly when you arrive, if they have one. Give a firm handshake, look the interviewer in the eye and greet them by name.

It may sound obvious, but an interview is one occasion where you must be on your best behaviour. You never get a chance to make a second impression, and you want to be remembered for all the right reasons. Treat everyone you meet with politeness, from the MD to the office boy. Be on show from the moment you walk into the office; you may think no-one is watching you send gossip on your mobile for half an hour while you are waiting to be seen, but secretaries will often report back to the boss. There is a big list of don'ts; never chew gum or smoke, don't fidget, don't leave your phone on, and don't interrupt. Most importantly, don't be rude about your previous employers or anyone else in the market. Not only will this make you seem like negative rather than positive, but you never know what the interviewer' s relationship to them might be. Your previous boss may be his golf partner.

You will probably be asked why you are looking at moving on from your previous job. Make sure that the answer makes you look like a motivated person who is trying to grow, rather than a difficult one who can't work with others.

Look the part

Research shows that a first impression has been made, based on what you look like, in the first ten seconds of a job interview. The best advice we've ever heard is to dress as though you already have the job. Know what professionals in that field wear (discounting things like uniforms, of course!) and dress at the same level or above. However, if the office is casual, still dress smart. This is not the time to try out a new fashion trend or be even slightly shocking; a conservative suit fits any occasion. Make sure that it fits well and you are comfortable in it; nothing looks worse than someone who is constantly tugging on ?? straps, pulling down a shirt, or stumbling on high heels.

Navy, black and grey give the most 'professional' image. Let the colour psychologists guide you for your accessories; red says you are confident and outgoing, yellow that you have a sense of humour, blue that you are intellectual and efficient and green that you can keep your head in a crisis.

Body language is exceptionally important. Although you and the interviewer may not consciously notice how you are holding yourself, it does have an influence on the interview. Eye contact is a must, as this shows that you are confident, sincere and have nothing to hide. Avoid touching your face or ears, or fiddling; this indicates evasiveness or lying. Crossed arms or legs will make you seem unapproachable. Don't slouch, as this indicated slovenliness, and don't sit too far forward, as you'll appear tense. The trick is to sit upright but relaxed; drop your shoulders slightly and take a breath before starting.

Have an interview strategy

The interviewer is there to ask questions, and you are there to give confident, intelligent answers. No matter what they ask, make sure that your answers do one thing; explain how you are the right person for this position. There are no wrong answers to interview questions; but there are answers that will make you seem more suited for the job than others. One way to make sure that yours do is to verify your answers; when ask about strengths, give examples. Rather than saying “I'm a good salesperson”, say “My ability to sell is shown in the fact that I exceeded my targets by 50 per cent every month last year.” It may feel like showing off, but if you don't tell them, how will they know?

Make sure you ask questions too. Interviews are not a one-way street. Asking your own questions shows that you have thought seriously about the company before coming, and that you want to make sure that they would fit in with you as well as you with them. And remember, you need to find out if you really want this job!

Have at least half a dozen questions prepared that need more than a yes or no answer. Ask about the nature of the work, the opportunities for growth and development and the training given to new staff. Ask how the position you are applying for fits into the company structure, and what it means on a day-to-day basis. Also ask some questions about where the company is going and what its future strategies are, and how it is adapting to industry trends. Knowing what is going on in their industry and asking how they see it always comes across as very impressive to interviewers, so read around first.

Another good question is to ask what they are looking for in the perfect person to fill this job; you can then make sure you let them know that you fit all their criteria before the end of the interview. And remember - questioning the interviewer does not mean asking about wages or benefits! Wait until you have been offered the position to talk about money, and don't be the one to bring it up.

Stay calm, speak slowly and try to let the interview turn into a conversation, rather than a question and answer session. If the dialogue flows naturally then the interviewer will think that they have more in common with you and know you better than they actually do. Therefore, let them direct the conversation but take an active part in it by speaking freely and not giving one-word answers. You should never be over-friendly, but take the lead from the interviewer as to the tone of the discussion. If they are friendly and open, make yourself personable; if they are formal and reserved, be as businesslike yourself. Don't ramble and don't interrupt; if you feel you are going on too much, pause, collect your thoughts and summarise what you want to say. Research shows that successful job interviewees spend 50 per cent of the time listening, rather than doing all the talking.

Leave on the right note

Always express your interest in the job just before leaving. This doesn't mean saying anything desperate or false; just let them know that you are impressed with what you have seen so far, and that you look forward to hearing from them. Find out what the next step is; will they contact you or will you send them examples of your work? And then thank them for their time. You want to leave them with no doubt in their minds that you are the right person for the job.

The day after the interview, send a brief but polite letter or email saying how much you enjoyed meeting the interviewer, how interesting the discussion was, and how much you look forward to hearing from them. Keep it short and undemanding; selling yourself all over again will make you look desperate. Just say that you are very interested in the position, and thank them again for their time. Not only is it polite, but it puts you back in their mind in a positive way.

After it's all over, take time to think about the interview and write down what you think went wrong, and what you think came across well. Even if you don't get this job, you can only get better and better with each interview!

One of my many aspirations

Feel like posting something today. Its been a while i know. I've been "busy bee-ing" with my FYP. I FINALLY understand what in the world i need to do. heh, it took me long enough to get it into my thick skull.

I'm now 23 years 23 days old ( what a coincidence, heh). They say that you'll become wiser as you get older. To be frank, I don't feel like i'm any wiser. Wise-less, definitely.

The older I become the more i realise that I don't know anything, the more i discover than the ocean is deeper than i once thought. I'm beginning to think about a lot more things. I'm starting to look down the road n plan for the future a lot more.

I'm also beginning to aspire to be a lot more things. The best son i could possibly be to my parents. The best Banglong I could possibly be to my siblings. The best friend I could possibly be to my peers. The best student I could possibly be to my FYP advisor (Dr. Kim...*gerun*). The best boyfriend I could possibly be to her.

To have an aspiration is like having cool air into your lungs. Its like having the warm summer sun kissing your cheeks after a cold winter's night. It lifts up your soul. You'll feel rejuvenated, it reaffirms your resolve, gives you a sense of purpose. Gives you are reason why to strain.

Always renew your resolution, always remind yourself of the dreams you had from yester-years. Rekindle your spirit. Revamp your drive. Reconstruct your platform. Retrace your steps. Review your achievements. Be grateful with what you have but don't be complacent with them.

Resistor, Capacitor, Inductor, Memristor

High-school physics students grappling with the delights of capacitors, inductors and resistors will be groaning into their exercise books. Electronics experts in California have finally succeeded in proving the existence of a fourth fundamental unit of electronic circuits: the 'memristor'.

The existence of the memristor, short for 'memory resistor', was first suggested in 1971, but only now have researchers succeeded in creating a real, working example. They hope that the new components could revolutionize computing, promising an end to frustrating waits for your computer to boot up.

"A memristor is essentially a resistor with memory," explains Stan Williams of HP Labs in Palo Alto, California, who reports the memristor's creation in this week's Nature ¹. "The actual resistance of the memristor changes depending on the amount of voltage and the time for which that voltage has been applied to the device."

That means that a computer created from memristive circuits can 'remember' what has happened to it previously, and freeze that memory when the circuit is turned off. This quality could allow computers to turn off and on again in an instant, as all the components could revert to their last state instantly, rather than having to 'boot up'.

Size problems

Williams and his colleagues created a memristor while experimenting with very tiny circuits. They sandwiched a nanoscopic film of a semiconductor (titanium dioxide) between two slivers of metal (platinum). Those are standard materials; the trick is to make the component just 5 nanometres wide — about 10,000 times thinner than a human hair.

It's only at the nanoscale that the behaviour of memristors begins to be detectable, Williams says. Any larger and they behave just like ordinary resistors, where resistance is equal to the voltage divided by the current. Electronics were originally developed at a scale far too large to see these effects and only recently have researchers been able to work at that scale.

That's probably one reason why the idea has mouldered on the shelf for 37 years, suggests Leon Chua, the electrical engineer at the University of California, Berkeley, who first postulated the existence of memristors in a 1971 paper².

Six years after reading Chua's 1971 work, Williams and his team managed to make the tiny device. The scale of the project was not the only challenge. The mathematics underlying the principle were not simple, says Williams. "The original prediction and the papers in which the prediction appeared were very heavy mathematically, so it required a very significant investment in order to read those papers," he says.

Chua, somewhat modestly, disagrees, and thinks the idea may have struggled to find its feet simply because it is so weird. "It's not really that difficult — it is more that it is sort of heretical. Nobody would believe this was the case because it sounds unnatural in some sense."

Volatile discovery

Chua says that he is pleased that his theory has finally been proved. "I was very excited — I never thought I would live to see this happen."

Now that his calculations have been vindicated, he thinks that memristors will be a big deal. They should be crucial in developing 'non-volatile' memory — the type that doesn't decay when the power is switched off.

Most computers use 'volatile memory' to perform their running functions, because this offers faster access to data than the non-volatile memory used to store data on hard disks and flash devices such as iPods. Building computers with memristors might allow a full switch to non-volatile memory, doing away with power-sapping 'running memory' and allowing devices to consume far less power when operating. "Someday I imagine that you won't have to charge your cellphone or your laptop so often," says Chua.

But what of the poor high-school students who now have more to learn in their electronics classes? "I believe this is going to be in textbooks in the near future," Chua says. He says that the rounding out of his theory and creation of an actual memristor should make the concept easier to grasp than it was when he first proposed it. Struggling students might be more, shall we say, resistant to progress.

I feel like sharing some pretty pictures with you people. Its from the signals assignment 1 that is due this coming friday (11th April).
These two pics are one of the same. The top one is known as the spectrogram and the bottom one is an ugly DTMF signal. The red notches represent the frequency that is prominent at a particular time interval of the DTMF signal. So since we can see 12 pairs of notches, this means that hidden within the DTMF signal, there's an encoded 12-digit number waiting to be found, heh (geek overload alert!). With some knowledge of what DTMF is, one can easily determine from the spectrogram that the encoded 12-digit number is 39226#853BC8. Here are some other spectrograms. Can you decode them?

KUALA LUMPUR 6 April - Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi yang selama ini berdiam diri terhadap kritikan pedas Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, hari ini mengecam bekas Perdana Menteri itu kerana 'membantu' merosakkan UMNO.

Perdana Menteri yang mengakui Dr. Mahathir mempunyai kekuatan tersendiri, kesal kerana ia telah disalahgunakan untuk terus-terusan mengkritik kepimpinannya sehingga melemahkan parti dan kerajaan Barisan Nasional (BN).

''Dia kata dia kuat, memanglah dia kuat. Tetapi kekuatan yang digunakan ialah sesuatu kekuatan yang disalahgunakan,'' katanya.

Abdullah bercakap pada sidang akhbar selepas Majlis Penerangan Bersama Presiden UMNO di Dewan Tun Hussein Onn, Pusat Dagangan Dunia Putra (PWTC) di sini hari ini.

Abdullah mengimbas komen Dr. Mahathir yang mempunyai nada berbeza semasa BN mencatat kemenangan besar pada pilihan raya umum lepas.

''Apa yang berlaku dulu, masa kita menang 2004, kata beliau.. 'ini kuat sangat, tak boleh, tak elok, mesti ada pembangkang'... seolah-olah dia bertolak-ansur dengan pembangkang sepanjang masa.

''Apabila pembangkang naik (menang), saya ingat kut dia nak raikan... dia hentam kita pula.

Dia kata mengapa pula jadi begini?

''Jadi menang banyak pun tak boleh, menang sikit pun tak boleh. Apa yang boleh?,'' soalnya.

Abdullah turut mempersoalkan kenyataan Dr. Mahathir yang mendakwa kebebasan media kini disekat.

''Apakah pada masa dulu tidak ada sekatan-sekatan seperti itu?'' soalnya.

Menurut Abdullah, Dr. Mahathir sendiri menghalang media membuat liputan tentang Tun Hussein Onn sejak mengambil alih jawatan daripada Perdana Menteri ketiga itu.

''Saya tahu pemberita semua dipanggil apabila Tun Mahathir mengambil alih (jawatan) Perdana Menteri, jangan (buat) berita, jangan tunjuk gambar (bekas Perdana Menteri ketiga) Tun Hussein (Onn), jangan beri berita kepada dia.

''Operasi Lalang siapa yang bertanggungjawab, saya tahu, bukan saya tak tahu. Orang tertentu jangan diberi liputan oleh akhbar. Ini adalah arahan-arahan yang dikeluarkan dari semasa ke semasa yang saya tahu,'' katanya.

Abdullah lega kerana kini ahli-ahli UMNO sendiri mula mengeluarkan kisah sebenar yang berlaku pada zaman Dr. Mahathir.

''Kita hendak bekerja dan bermuafakat, bekerjasama ini yang penting. Rakyat tidak dapat menerima UMNO terus bersengketa pada waktu ini,'' tegasnya.

Ditanya sama ada Dr. Mahathir yang dikaitkan dengan campur tangan pelantikan hakim akan disiasat seperti disarankan oleh peguam yang juga Ahli Parlimen DAP, Karpal Singh, beliau berkata, ia perlu dipertimbangkan sekiranya ada bukti.

''Kalau ada tuduhan yang terbukti kepada sesiapa pun... tak kan kita nak pejam mata, tak boleh,'' katanya.

Bagaimanapun tegasnya, keputusan untuk membuka fail siasatan itu tidak akan dibuat olehnya.

''Saya tidak buka fail (siasatan). Bukan tugas saya untuk membuka fail siasatan ke atas sesiapa pun. Itu tugas Badan Pencegah Rasuah. Kalau ia rasa itu sesuatu yang sudah wajar dan ada bukti, terserah kepada mereka,'' katanya.

Bagaimanapun buat masa ini, katanya, beliau perlu memperbetulkan banyak perkara utama seperti harga minyak dan kenaikan harga barang yang menjadi isu cukup besar dalam pilihan raya lalu.

A few years back I came across this interesting design for a one wheeled electric skateboard at hackaday.com. The design was very simple but the idea is way more interesting and cool than the Segway. Anyway, today I came across two other designs for the one wheeled electric skateboard by Chris Coleman and Rodger Cleye. So all in all there's already 3 designs of the one wheeled electric skateboard out there and there's probably more on the way.

I think that this innovative concept will make it big sometime in the future. Whether it'll be another recreational device or a whole different way to commute from point A to point B. So thus far I'm on observation mode for the following innovative concepts:

1. Head Tracking device
2. One wheeled electric scooter
3. Quadcopter
4. Wireless power transmission/Energy harvesting.

Well then, back to work!

CS revival

After about 2 years plus, I started playing Counter Strike again. It still cracks me up, hehe, especially when I managed to get a clean head shot on one of my peers. Those who were in the CS turnmoil were myself, anas, and amar. I am proud to announce that I won quite a number of rounds against the terrorists. Using my trusty sniper rifle and positioning myself at strategic, hidden locations, I managed to get at least 10 head shots, to the frustration of amar and anas, hahaha. Now I'm totally hooked to CS again, let's have a match once a week guys!!!

3 weeks of term break is just around the corner now, with a number of speed bumps along the way. First on the list is the Control Test on 1st April worth 15%. The test will cover things like plant matrix, controllability, observability, and stabilizability. That a heck a lot of things to cover. Sigh.

Next on the list is the management assignment submission on 2nd April worht 20%. I've decided to name the product CHUCK GLOVE. Sounds cute so I stuck to it. Its about 50% done. All that is left is to include Selo's part and a final review. So far its smooth sailing aye!

Last but not least is the signal assignment submission (official due date 3rd April, actual due date 11th April) worth 10%. We have yet to work on the filter designing some other codings. We have also yet to begin with the report.

Last Thursday the IET YMS (Institue of Engineering Technology Young Members Section) committee conducted an induction program held at the staff common room. Everything went pretty well, we managed to get 4 new members out of about 25 who came. It was a huge turnout and we are pretty happy. I'm hoping to enter the present around the world competition or the short paper competition this year too. All I have to do now is to renew my membership. Now where's that membership card....

There's also an opening for a leadership position in GK. Sounds very intriguing but I don't think I'll be able to contribute much. I've never joined any of the GK's activies before. But then again this might be my only chance to try them out. Um...

I've also received this email advertising about a PhD opportunity at Uni. Its about energy harvesting for instrumentation devices. I've been interested with wireless energy transfer as of late and this research has intrigued me quite a bit. From what I understand, the research, headed byAssoc. Prof Chan of the Mechatronics Department, mainly revolves around capturing vibration energy (something like Seiko Kinetic Watches or Fossil Automatic Watches perhaps). Sounds interesting aye~!

Recently I've bought myself a new set of bed sheet and pillow cases. Apart from the "new smell" scent, it looks kinda nice. I also noticed that I'm also much more rested, thanks to the extremely comfy pillows. Thanks B!!

I've also bought myself a grooming kit. The kit includes a moustache/beard treamer and electric hair clipper, nose hair cutter (which I'm pretty sure I won't have any use for, my nose hair are short thank you very much), shaver, etc, etc. There're 39 pieces in all. At NZ$40 after a 50% discount, its quite a bargain. I know this is suggesting that I'm self-obsessive, but there's nothing wrong to feel good about yourself right?

Alba roox, in loving memory

I used to own an alba roox, such a beauty it was. The picture above shows a similar modal, but in black, mine was in silver. It was given by my dad as a present. Gave it to my bro in exchange for his watch right before my maiden flight to NZ. I miss it dearly. No other watch can ever replace it, not even my current Timex Reef Gear. Apart from the apparent sentimental value, I also like its design and how it felt around my wrist. Sigh...

Well, life goes on. After some little searching, i found a really nice alba roox on ebay, costs about US$270 including shipping. Sadly enough, I officially dry to the bones,safe for a few bucks on my credit card. Should I, should I, should I??

With some simple "rearrangements" and sophisticated coding, he came up with a sweet as head tracking system. It's so cool that I must include a of a head tracking application video here. Can't wait to see how this concept will develope. I'm even thinking of trying it out myself!

The Malaysian Oath, a revisit

I was a school prefect for most of my schooling days and I was the assembly coordinator when I was in my fifth year of high school. Whether it was genuinely due to my leadership skills or just because of my good looks (ya right), that's another story I won't be indulging you with. Anyway, every Monday I would stand in front of the whole school, and lead them in reciting the Malaysian Oath.

And here I proudly stand, right here and now, and recite the exact Malaysian Oath I was taught, day in day out, back in my primary and secondary school days. My oath to Malaysia.

BAHAWASANYA NEGARA KITA MALAYSIA mendukung cita-cita hendak :

May this revisit reminds us of the oath we once made. Don't let the Malaysia Oath be just another adornment on school excercise books.

MB BARU: KETUA UMNO BAHAGIAN SOKONG ISTANA

Read utusan online this morning, these two articles got my attention. The reasoning given by Datuk Syed Ali is sound and the action suggested by Datuk Tengku Putra is correct.And alhamdulillah, Terengganu finally has an MB.

Some people believe that when one supports the opposition, it means that he or she doesn't give a BS as to what's happening within the ruling party, or believe that he or she will use these kind of news as a reason why they don't want to join/support the ruling government. I for one am not like that.

I support the truth, I am against cruelty. I will give support where support is due. I will criticise when criticism is called for. I am not a fanatic, I don't do well with blind faith. If its wrong, its wrong. If it right, its a green light in my book.

Don't patronise me just because my inclination, my support for PAS. Don't look down on me when I'm pro-DAP in certain issues. Don't treat me differently just because I'm sentimental about PKR. Don't talk to me with a different tone just because I am patriotic about UMNO. I will give support where support is due! I will criticise when criticism is called for!

I am also a Malaysian. I am proud to be a Malaysian. I am proud to be a part of a country that is Malaysia. Like you, I want a peaceful and safe Malaysia for my children and grandchildren. Like you, I don't want riots nor instability. Like you, I don't want a goverment that is weak. Like you, I want all that is best for Malaysia's future. When I die, I want my children to be a better muslim than me, be a better Malaysian than I could ever be.

I pray that all the things that had happened for the past few weeks after PRU12 are just minor hiccups. I pray that these are just baby steps towards something great and prosperous. A new beginning that we, the next generation of leaders, movers and shakers, should be a part of. A new Malaysia. Yes, a new Malaysia, that our children and grandchildren could inherit with pride.

Semasa di usia remaja, fikiran saya mungkin tidak pergi terlalu jauh.

Apa sahaja pencapaian negara sama ada di peringkat kebangsaan mahu pun di pesada antarabangsa, ia mencetuskan rasa bangga dan syukur menjadi rakyat Malaysia. Setiap kali mendengar lagu Negaraku dimainkan, terasa megah menjadi anak yang lahir di bumi pertiwi ini dan sentiasa optimis menuju ke masa depan.

Tentu sahaja penglibatan saya di dalam pasukan Pengakap banyak menyuntik semangat itu. Serius dalam aktiviti yang dijalankan hingga beroleh anugerah Keris Emas pada tahun 1987, perasaan bangga menjadi rakyat Malaysia oleh seorang anak kecil yang masih hingusan di usia 12 tahun, perasaan cintakan negara ini begitu mendalam.

Setiap tahun menjelangnya 31 Ogos, jiwa rasa berkobar melihat bendera Malaysia berkibar, biar pun belum bergelar Jalur Gemilang. Patriotisme, bukan dipaksa-paksa. Ia datang sendiri.

Sering sahaja berfikir, apakah yang boleh kulakukan untuk kebaikan negara?

TERGANGGU

Kali pertama perasaan itu jadi begitu terganggu, apabila saya mula melangkah ke fikiran dewasa dan terbuka untuk membaca serta melihat salah laku pemimpin negara.

Peristiwa Memali 1985 saya tonton di televisyen tanpa faham yang jelas. Namun Drama Minggu Ini yang memaparkan kisah “Guru Yahya” sebagai memomok terhadap mereka yang terkorban di dalam peristiwa itu, sangat mengganggu fikiran saya. Ketika usia merangkak ke umur belasan, saya mula tersedar, bahawa ada sesuatu yang tidak kena.

Ia disusuli pula oleh Operasi Lalang 1987 yang meninggalkan kesan yang negatif terhadap perasaan saya.

Tahun yang sama menjadi lebih sulit dan rumit, apabila pertelingkahan di antara Dr. Mahathir dan Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah menatijahkan pembubaran UMNO atas perintah mahkamah. Ia telah mengakibatkan tindakan Dr. Mahathir menggunakan kuasanya hingga Parlimen mengubah perlembagaan negara Artikel 121 dan 145 yang menghadkan kuasa mahkamah. Al-marhum ayahanda saya yang sangat peka dengan hal ini telah banyak berbual dengan saya tentang kisah pemecatan Ketua Hakim Negara Tun Salleh Abbas ketika itu. 1988 menjadikan saya semakin tertanya-tanya, “apa sudah jadi dengan negara ini?”

Perasaan kecewa terhadap insiden-insiden ini menjadi lebih rasional apabila saya melanjutkan pelajaran ke Sekolah Izzuddin Shah. Suntikan nilai agama, menjadikan saya lebih peka dengan perkara yang berlaku di sekeliling. Didikan agama menjadikan kita lebih peduli terhadap negara, tetapi perasaan Patriotisme semakin mengelirukan.

Cintakan negara, apakah ia sama dengan cintakan pemimpin-pemimpin semasa ketika itu? Mahu menghayati lagu Negaraku, tetapi video klip memaparkan wajah perosak-perosak kemanusian anak watan ini.

Seingat saya, itulah pertama kali saya menyebut, “pembangkang adalah golongan yang paling cintakan negara”. Hanya pembangkang yang menyuarakan bantahan terhadap salah laku yang jelas sekali merosakkan negara.

Sambutan Hari Kebangsaan semakin hambar.

Tambah pula dengan pencapaian Malaysia khususnya di bidang sukan sedikit demi sedikit merudum dan tidak banyak yang boleh dibanggakan. Tentu sahaja satu pingat emas yang dimenangi, lebih bermakna daripada sekadar kejayaan mencipta nama menjadi Tuan Rumah acara sukan terbaik. Segala-galanya mula beransur menjadi superficial.

KEMUNCAK

Apa yang lebih mengeruhkan fikiran saya, adalah tentang tindakan UMNO pada tahun 1993 yang sekali lagi berusaha untuk menghapuskan imuniti Raja-raja, setelah tidak berhasil dalam cubaan pertamanya pada tahun 1983. Biar pun tiada imuniti yang wajar dijustifikasikan dari segi agama, namun cara pindaan tersebut diusahakan telah mengaibkan institusi Raja-raja Melayu malah ada pula yang tergamak menabalkan ‘Sultan Baru’ sebagaimana tindakan Datuk Seri Annuar Musa yang telah menabalkan Tengku Ibrahim Petra sebagai “Sultan Kelantan” pilihannya.

Rekod buruk UMNO terhadap Raja-raja Melayu sukar dilupakan.

Saya semakin hilang perasaan terhadap keMalaysiaan diri kerana kecewa dengan pelbagai salah laku yang semacam tiada penghujungnya. Pasti, pudarnya perasaan itu bukan kerana pudarnya cinta kepada negara. Tidak sama sekali. Perasaannya mungkin boleh digambarkan seperti pandangan Rasulullah SAW melihat Kaabah binaan Ibrahim ‘alayhi al-Salaam tercemar oleh ratusan berhala yang mengotorinya.

Terdorong dengan satu perasaan yang kuat untuk membebaskan ’sesuatu’ yang masih terjajah di era Merdeka.

Tanah airku bagai suci dalam debu!

REFORMASI

Tentu sekali perasaan itu memuncak apabila pada tahun 1998, Malaysia digegarkan dengan pemecatan DS Anwar Ibrahim secara yang sungguh mengaibkan.

Saya bukanlah peminat DSAI ketika itu, namun perkembangan beliau sering saya ikuti. Masih terngiang ucapan beliau menghina barisan pembangkang di Melaka pada April 1998. Katanya “kita menyediakan sistem perbankan tanpa faedah, tetapi mereka hanyalah pembangkang tanpa faedah!”

Politik itu jatuh dan bangun.

Melihat DSAI diaibkan, tilam diusung keluar masuk mahkamah, kanak-kanak bercakap soal seks, liwat dan perlakuan sumbang.. terasa bagai maruah negara sudah hilang sehilang-hilangnya.

Masih bermastautin di medan kembara ilmu, saya yang ketika itu berada di Istanbul, menonton babak-babak genting sejarah negara hingga menimbulkan tanda tanya yang telah datang berulang kali, “apa sudah jadi dengan negara ini?”

Biar pun Pilihanraya 1999 memperlihatkan perubahan yang amat menggalakkan, tetapi ada cetusan rasa bimbang di hati, “selama mana hangatnya emosi yang membara ini?”. Perubahan yang berlaku adalah perubahan yang penuh emosi.

Nyata sekali Pilihanraya 2004 menyaksikan harapan untuk melihat negara berubah ke arah yang lebih baik musnah kerana segala rakaman sejarah terhadap salah laku pemimpin negara seakan terpadam oleh majoriti besar-besaran yang diraih oleh Barisan Nasional.

KINI

Tsunami Politik Pilihanraya 2008 mengubah segala-galanya.

Keangkuhan BN akhirnya tumbang. Peluang untuk melihat perubahan bersinar kembali. Sebuah negara yang ditadbir oleh kerajaan yang lebih berhati-hati dengan pembangkang yang mampu berperanan secara efektif untuk check and balance, memberi peluang untuk kita semua melihat Malaysia kembali ke landasan kecemerlangan yang sebenar.

Malah saya bersyukur dengan peranan efektif yang dimainkan oleh pihak Istana di banyak negeri dalam menyelesaikan pertelingkahan yang sukar diselesaikan atas nama politik kepartian. Peranan Raja-raja sebagai payung yang menaungi kesejahteraan rakyat kembali terserlah dan institusi itu berjaya meraih kredibilitinya semula sebagai benteng yang wajar dipelihara.

Selepas Menteri Besar Perak yang baru, Ir. Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin selesai mengangkat sumpah, saya menarik nafas lega. Perbualan bersama rakan-rakan di Ipoh menyinarkan harapan baru bukan sahaja untuk negeri Perak tanah kelahiran saya, malah untuk Malaysia Baru yang lebih membanggakan untuk diwariskan kepada anak-anakku.

Life thus far

Its already almost halfway into the 3rd week of lectures. Things are starting to heat up and the pace is slowly turning from a slow crawl to a persistent breeze-walk. So to share with you people my current pain int the rear end, er assignments, here are some updates.

Signals assignment:
For this here ass-ingment, me and nama need to design a DTMF (dual tone multiple frequency) detector that enable us to determine what number was dialled on the telephone by "listening" to the dial tone. It uses an algorithm known as goertzel and an FIR filter. We are almost done with the matlab coding for the algorithm. Next would be to design the filter. Here's the graph we have managed to obtain thus far (frequency spectrum of a 941 Hz and 1633 Hz signal with sampling frequency Fs = 8000 Hz and number of samples, N=205). The peaks on the left shows the presence of the 2 frequencies (its kinda similar to what we did in SPM, you know, in chemistry, when we wanna know if there's C2H2O4 n stuff in a substance, we would use spectroscopy). The two peaks on the right are just duplicates. This is where the FIR filter (specifically,lowpass filter) comes in. Note: lowpass filter = allows low frequencies to pass, blocks high frequencies)

Management assignment:
This here assignment involves product designing and is part of the uni's Entre competition. Me and Faiz (aka Selo) have decided to design a haptic glove for the blind. With this glove, blind people would be able to determine the location of a particular object with ease. There's already a GPS system to assist blind people outside of the house. Our product aims at the domestic setting, for example, determining where the radio is or identifying particular documents/cards/lables. We plan to use RFID tags and some sort of a multidirectional detector. The report is still under way.

Final year project:
For my FYP, I am required to realize a suspended microstrip structure. I'm still at the "reading + understanding" stage. So far I've covered about "method of moments" and Dr. Kim has asked me to start writing up the matlab code for it.

I read math

I read math. Yup, u read that right, I read math as if its a short novel about magicians and cyborgs. I read math as if its beautiful poem woven by an inquisitive heart. I read math as if its a haiku written during afternoon tea.
I just love how simple symbols could express complicated scenarios. How it compresses ideas into little elegent chuncks. How a few lines of it could mean a difference between sleepless fustration and a good nite slumber.
I read math because, I hate reading long sentences. I don't do well reading a thick novel. I can't seem to sit for an hour reading but I sure can skip lunch doing algebra.

Back to the normal routines.

After about 11 hours on the plane, I'm finally in Chch. It's kinda nice to be back here though what lies ahead daunts me still. FYP, 80% honours, the list goes on

Well, tomorrow would be the official start to the new semester and the official end to a quite an eventful summer. First class would be at 9am. Lectures on monday ends at 5pm. Sigh, what a long day to start the semester with.

From the looks of things (the timetable), this year should be more relaxed. I should know better than to believe in such hopeful fantasies, heh. There's no harm in hoping right? hehe

I've finally moved into my new accomo, alhamdulillah. Room 1 at 301 would be dearly missed, it holds too many memories, sad ones, happy ones, kelakar ones, mundane ones...also dearly missed would be my beloved toily, nothing beats not having to share the shower with anyone else, and being able to do all the little and big "transactions" with the toilet door wide open, so that I wouldn't faint in my own flatulence, hahahaha. Sigh, gone are the days...

The bigger picture

This morning i had my breakfast in Shah Alam at my family's favorite eating spot nearby the masjid. I had what I've been craving for ever since i came back, nasi dagang! It really hits the spot, and alhamdulillah, i crave for it no more.

Next me and my family went to sunway pyramid. Its been a while since I've been here, nothing much has changed, same ol same ol. I was supposed to look for a pair of pants to bring back to chch. At first I thought of buying a pair of jeans, but couldn't find a pair that suits my taste. Then I considered buying a pair of cargo, but alas, couldn't find a nice pair either. Then my attention drifted to bags. I found this really nice one at F.O.S, but my dad said, after one look, that it looked like a girl's bag. Being easily convinced that I am, I looked elsewhere. Found another nice one at BATA (ok i know wutcha thinking, what in the world am looking for bags at a shoe store?!) but the same thing happened, my dad convinced me that I wouldn't want to find myself with a bag like that, sigh...

So in the end, what did I buy? Nothing, though i did manage to get my stomach filled with soba at Sushi King ( the kanji they used for "King" still annoys me up to this day). Yusran found himself a decent shirt for school. Nisrin found herself a nice white cowgirl-ish shoe. In the end it was only me and afnan who did not find anything for our selfs , another sigh...

My parents told me that I'm fickle minded. Yea, i guess i am, i admit that i am fickle minded, no use denying it coz that's how i think of myself too. Its not something that i do on purpose ( i think), but i find it much easier to be that way. Whether its a good thing or a bad thing, i'll leave that for you to decide.

My parents also pointed out that I'm very cheap when it comes to buying stuff for myself. Yup, I accept that too. That's how I have been ever since i was young. I find it much easier to buy expensive stuff for other people that buying expensive things for myself. If i did managed to buy something that's expensive for my own use, I would feel guilty for about three days (maybe 4) thinking "why in the world did i buy this?". By the fourth or fifth day after the purchase though, I would 'redha' and move on, heh...

that's how i am, i guess. My sense of joy is when i am able to give something to somebody. At times this has led me to not have any money by mid month, but i don't really care. The wealth that i seek is "ketenangan".

Pilihan raya is just around the corner and BN seems to go all out in making sure that at long last, Kelantan would be under its wing. That's nice of them and i imagine Kelantan would have a lot of modal insans, tall buildings, better roads, cleaner roadsides. Though for me, it doesn't really matter how many masjids the state government manages to erect within its rule. What matters most is how many safs are there during subuh congregation in these many masjids? How many youths are there taking part in masjid activities ( the proposal to have PSSGM at masjids is a good start)? It would be a huge shame to have 50-something masjids newly built but no one to fill it up during maghrib and would just collect dust. 'Suci dalam debu' would go just a tad too far.

Once there were these two contractors and they were asked to erect a 20 story building. Any manpower, building materials and so forth would be supplied. So the contractors began working. From the start the two of them decided that they could not work together, since, they believe, they are mutual rivals.

One of them was very fast, it only took him a month to finish the foundation. The cement was still wet when he decided to work on the building's main structure. His design was elaborate, top notch, state of the art. All of the other contractors were amazed at his work, and gave him dozens upon dozens of recognition.

The other man, on the other hand was very slow. By the end of the 5th month, he was still working on the foundation. Every hole dug was done with greatest of care and every cement laid was evened out ever so carefully. All of the other contractors began to doubt of this man's building skills. Many criticized him for being too slow and not prioritizing in his work. 2 years later the first contractor finished with his 20 story building, about 15 months before the 2nd contractor finally finished with his. In the end both buildings were spectacular, both were stunning.

It wasn't long before the first man's building began to crumble. Cracks were showing up everywhere. Water leaking from the ceiling was also reported. All of the residents complained and expressed their worries about the building's safety. In the end, the building had to be demolished. Praise changed to insult, and the contractor's reputation was tarnished forever.

The 2nd man's building was solid as a rock. Maintenance cost was extremely low, it also received various awards for its exceptional quality. The contractor who built it was given high praise and was requested to further expand the building. Thanks to its solid foundation, the building was enjoyed by many generations to come.

This story is totally fictitious. Not at all related to any individual, alive or dead or living dead.I made it up just waste cyberspace with my jibberjabber. Though I would like you to consider what would happen if both contractors work together from the start. The requirement was to build a 20 story building, not 2, not three, not four for fun. It would be great if both contractors had decided to work together from the start. Both utilizing each other's strengths and compensate each other's weaknesses, putting aside their bitter rivalries, placing their heads together and sharing ideas. Coz in the end, their goals are somewhat the same, their goals are somewhat similar, if they looked hard enough that is. If that were to happen instead of building two separate buildings, I bet that the building would be magnificent indeed.

Line in sight

Alhamdulillah I've finally completed my IT at VCMSB, Terengganu. The IT this time around was much more "involved" compared to the IT attachment I've done at Telekom ,Brickfields. I had to wear this yellow coveralls which made me look like a giant lemon and safety boots every single day. It was kinda awkward at first, especially when one needs to do some serious long term investments, if you know what i mean. The plant's not really that big, about 30 mins worth of cycling would have the plant much covered. The plant's CCB (center control block) is only 5 mins away from the plant's main entrance.

I was told by my senior before I began my IT that VCMSB was the worst place to be. I guess I can understand why, though I'm not entirely sure if its the worst since I've never been to any of Petronas' other Petrochem plants. The work atmosphere was good, the technicians were more than keen to share what they know, and the execs were really kind and helpful.

I was assigned under Mr Nasrul, executive for instrumentation and control. I'm very much keen with this branch of EE, after reassuring myself that electrical power was just not my cup of tea. The department is involved in maintaining all of the instruments involved in the plant, ranging from control valves and sensors, to PLC and DCS. Unfortunately I did not have the chance to go into intricate details though the overall surface view obtained throughout my attachment period has proven to be an eye opener of sort. Even though this field is more prone to work behind the scenes and sometimes shy away from the main stage, its importance is paramount. With it the plant could not function. without the nerves system, we could not function.

I've just completed my medical check up to, cost me 2 big ones. The results weren't that surprising, thanks to all the keropok lekors, cendols, and ABCs. Hopefully this year would witness the birth of aiman the shrunked, insyaAllah.

Another 3 days to go, that's right, and I'm off to NZ, hopefully for the last time. A lot of things will be happening this year. The Petronas Interview, FYP, the trip to Queenstown (finally!!), and the bungy jumping. Can't believe that all of this is about to end and be replaced with another chapter of my life. It has been a long journey and the finishing line is within sight. I wonder if I should repaint the line a few yards further up.

A new year, a new resolution

A loyal cliché follower that I am, I believe that with the new year, whether it be the plain new year, awal muharram, or gong xi fat chai, a new resolution should be resolved. It doesn't matter if it's unreachable, or unrealistic, or "poyo", or childish, or whatever la. The only thing that matters is that it should be followed with determination, dedication, and hard work. If the goal was not reached by 31st December 2008 at 2359 hours, at least you can look back and say, "hey, i given it all that I've got, broke every necessary sweat , crawled every necessary inch. I've gone through all that and I'm still here"

This year would be my final year at UoC, insyaAllah. For this year, I plan to use my blog to record my progress on my FYP. I also hope that I could blog more consistently and pour my own thoughts instead of c0py-pasting lyrics and articles as a blog entry. I'm also determined to be a better person, upholding my nickname (aimaneo) to always try something new, always strive to improve myself for the better, be more open minded to new things, and not resting on my laurels, finding solace in my old achievements.

My love for nama has grown exponentially over the time we were with each other. She has taught me about a lot of things. About myself, about life, about what it means to have someone pouring their love to you. I've learned about my distorted fallacies, my unsound habits, my erred presumptions. My heart feels full, filled to the rim. I love the way her eyes look, the way her voice sounds to my ears, her caring nature. I feel so blessed that I've found you dear.

2007 has been wonderful, superb and fantastic, I pray that 2008 would be much better.

To my family, papa, mummy, fasyan, yusran, afnan, nisrin, you are the only family I'd ever want for the rest of my life, the blood that flows in my veins.

MELAYU ITU BANGSA, ISLAM ITU AGAMA

Remaja Melayu harus dapat membezakan tentang Melayu itu adalah suatu bangsa dan Islam itu adalah suatu agama. Seperti juga suatu ketika dulu Melayu adalah suatu bangsa dan Buddha dan Hindu adalah agamanya. Proses dakwah dan sejarah telah menjadikan bangsa Melayu beragama Islam.

Allah menyebutkan di dalam al-Quran bahawa bangsa-bangsa itu adalah diciptakan. Mesti ada sebab atau hikmah mengapa bangsa-bangsa itu diciptakan. Paling tidak di dalam al-Quran menyebutkan supaya berlaku proses litaarrafu atau berkenalan dalam erti kata yang luas.

Berkenalan boleh membawa kepada perkongsian hal-hal yang memberi manfaat. Ia juga boleh membawa kerjasama dan toleransi. Selain itu, juga boleh memberikan jalan terhadap perkongsian nilai-nilai bersama yang memberi faedah bersama.

Kewujudan suatu bangsa adalah suatu takdir. Apa yang menjadi asas bangunnya sesuatu bangsa berkait rapat dengan agama. Melayu sebagai suatu bangsa apabila ditindikkan dengan Islam, ia membawa konotasi atau maksud ummah. Islam membentuk pandangan alam atau tasawwur orang-orang Melayu.

Islam membentuk jalur berfikir dan bertindak orang-orang Melayu. Sekiranya bangsa Melayu menjadikan Islam sebagai cara hidup, ia bermakna Islam mendasari kehidupan orang Melayu.

Sebaliknya, sekiranya orang-orang Melayu menjadikan Islam tidak lebih sebagai pengenalan atau identifikasi agama, maka tidak banyak jalur hidupnya dipengaruhi oleh agama ini. Bangsa ini bakal terdedah untuk menganut apa saja fahaman baik Barat dan Timur dan tidak menjadikan Islam sebagai dasar hidupnya.

Ia tidak bermakna bahawa menjadi Islam, aspek-aspek budaya yang positif yang ada pada bangsa Melayu harus ditolak. Islam memberikan asas prinsip dan budaya Melayu melakukan adaptasi kepada prinsip tersebut.

Contohnya Islam memberi asas kepada prinsip berpakaian dan menutup aurat. Dengan menggunakan baju Melayu atau baju kurung yang bertudung, prinsip itu dapat dipatuhi walaupun berasaskan budaya Melayu.

Gotong-royong adalah amalan orang Melayu turun-temurun. Amalan ini selari dengan prinsip jemaah yang dianjurkan oleh Islam. Apabila semangat gotong-royong berkembang dalam orang Melayu, ia menggalakkan prinsip kerjasama dan muafakat. Ia selari dengan prinsip jemaah yang dianjurkan oleh Islam.

Apabila Islam menjadi anutan bangsa Melayu, konsep ummah menjadi dasar kepada budaya hidup orang- orang Melayu. Faktor akidah yang menjadi faktor penyatuan bangsa Melayu dan bangsa-bangsa lain yang beragama Islam menjadikan konsep ummah sebagai ikatan yang menghubungkan manusia sesama manusia.

Kelainan dan perbezaan yang ada dari segi taraf dan status bukanlah isu. Ini kerana Islam memberikan prinsip asas bahawa yang terbaik dalam kalangan bangsa-bangsa atau individu ialah umat yang bertakwa. Prinsip takwa tidak saja menghubungkan manusia atau bangsa-bangsa dengan Penciptanya tetapi menghubungkan manusia sesama manusia dalam erti kata yang luas.

Bagi menjadikan bangsa Melayu sebahagian dari ummah yang kuat, penguasaan ilmu pengetahuan menjadi syarat penting. Dalam masa yang sama bangsa Melayu harus menjadi bangsa contoh dalam memberikan khidmat dan amanah, keadilan dalam layanan, akhlak yang terpuji supaya kualiti bangsa itu tegak atas prinsip-prinsip murni yang dianjurkan oleh Islam.

Kalau bangsa Melayu tidak menjadikan Islam sebagai dasar hidup, orang-orang Melayu akan cenderung bersifat perkauman. Pertimbangan dalam tindakan lebih banyak tertumpu kepada pertimbangan bangsa atau kaum tidak pertimbangan agama. Sekiranya perkara seperti ini terjadi kejelasan orang-orang Melayu dengan imej Islamnya akan tercalar.

Remaja Melayu dalam memahami makna bangsa dan agama harus jelas. Memang benar Melayu ialah suatu bangsa. Suatu bangsa itu memerlukan pedoman, sistem nilai, asas tamadun, tradisi dan budaya supaya bangsa itu menjadi hebat dan alamiah atau global sifatnya. Islam adalah agama tamadun dan pernah memimpin pemikiran manusia lebih 700 tahun.

Menghubungkan faktor Melayu dengan faktor Islam menjadikan bangsa Melayu sebahagian dari ummah dalam erti kata yang luas.

Remaja Melayu harus mampu mengisi proses pembinaan diri dengan menjadikan Islam sebagai asas dan prinsip. Dalam bidang ilmu pengetahuan, Islam menganjurkan orang lelaki dan perempuan wajib menuntut ilmu. Pendidikan dalam tradisi Islam adalah pendidikan sepanjang hayat.

Ilmu-ilmu yang dipelajari tidak saja dari tradisi dan tamadun Islam sendiri tetapi diharuskan untuk mempelajari sumber-sumber ilmu dari tamadun lain selagi ia memberi manfaat.

Remaja Melayu harus memiliki sistem nilai yang tinggi supaya asas membezakan baik dan buruk akan sesuatu diambil dari pertimbangan Islam. Kalaulah pertimbangan bangsa dan individu yang dijadikan sandaran ia mungkin cenderung menyuburkan

faham individu, perkauman atau

nafsu-nafsi.

Remaja Melayu dalam menghadapi kerenah zaman harus memahami terlebih dahulu kekuatan yang pernah ada dalam tamadun Melayu yang berasaskan Islam atau tamadun umat yang berkembang di bawah keunggulan peribadi dan ilmu Islam. Menguasai aspek-aspek ini boleh menyumbang ke arah memperkasakan remaja dengan faktor-faktor berbanding yang tinggi dan boleh memandu remaja ke arah membuat pilihan yang betul dan tepat dalam proses untuk maju dan membangun.

Justeru itu cabaran utama bangsa Melayu kini ialah cabaran kepimpinan dan kepengikutan, cabaran keilmuan dan penguasaan teknologi, cabaran ekonomi dan juga pengurusan, cabaran strategik dan mengurus krisis dan cabaran menjadi bangsa penyumbang yang bermakna.

Ia mengundang remaja Melayu supaya memiliki fokus dalam hidup. Ramai remaja Melayu kini sudah hilang fokus dalam menempuh jalur kehidupan. Kemakmuran kebendaan yang ada disalahgunakan untuk terlibat dalam kegiatan-kegiatan yang merosakkan. Hilangnya fokus ini menyebabkan sebahagian remaja Melayu tidak menjadi aset kepada negara tetapi menjadi beban jangka panjang yang merumitkan.

Di samping fokus, remaja Melayu harus memiliki usaha yang berterusan. Banyak elemen malas, membuang masa, berlagak, melanggar peraturan dan undang-undang, gaya hidup bermewah-mewah, menjadi ‘pak turut’ terhadap sesuatu yang negatif, suka bercinta secara nafsu nafsi.

Malah ramai yang sudah hilang pertimbangan agama dengan menjadi murtad. Tidak tahu dosa pahala dalam amalan dan perlakuan. Akibatnya isu remaja Melayu sering menjadi polemik semasa dan perkembangan yang ada semakin membimbangkan.

Akar kepada masalah ini ialah remaja Melayu mengalami ketirisan akidah dan iman. Darinya timbul masalah akhlak yang semakin subur. Jalan keluarnya perlu diperkasakan mereka dengan fahaman agama yang berasaskan ilmu dan tamadun.

Pendidikan dalam keluarga , institusi pengajian dan pendidikan, masyarakat harus dibentuk ke arah saling menyumbang bagi memperkasa remaja Melayu dengan kekuatan agama dan pemahaman terhadap kepentingan adab dan peradaban.

thinking pose...

i find it excrutiatingly hard to update my blogs, mainly because i have yet to decide what my blog's gonna be about. i don't want it to be like a diary entry (what i did today, what i plan to do tomorrow, how i'm feeling at the moment, my current crush, all that)...i also don't want it to be monotonous. i want it to be informative, useful, and relevent to current issues....
tapi....kalau fikir banyak sangat, in the end xjadi apa2....there are some instances where thinking too much would give more harm than good. Last year for example, i was given the responsibility to design a t-shirt to be given to Dato' Mustapa. I had a simple idea in mind, but the idea grew and grew, till i was way over myself, trying to cramp everything on that one tiny t-shirt. as one can imagine, this attempt caused me to be sleep deprived, moody and unable to focus on other tasks that are also as important...the final was very simple, and when i look at it, it made me wonder why i hadn't thought of it from the start.
i currently have 2 blogs...one being nukilan nurani, and the other, brain bowl which is attached to my friendster account...brain bowl was meant to be a room for me to pour anything that's occupies my neurons at that point in time. but "anything" is too general thus making brain bowl purpose-less...
the reason why i'm putting so much emphasis on "purpose" is simple...can you imagine a soccer game without goal posts? or a game of golf without the hole to putt the ball into? or bowling without the pins? or...u get the picture...it would be funny, hilarious in fact...there would be no drive for christiano ronaldo to pull off fancy foot work, no reason whatsoever for shalin zulkifli to throw a 14-15 pound ball down a lane...purpose gives value to the effort spent and exhausted and this value is determined by how well we define this purpose, the more thorough the purpose is, the more valuable and meaningful our effort becomes...
if an effort and sweat are aimed for material gains and other worldly endevours, then i suppose its value can be measured by the thickness of our wallets and the brand of our sneakers...but what happens after this life? can we still wear Nike Skin with our kain kapan?

what we gain in this world stays in this world...harimau mati meninggalkan belang, manusia mati meninggalkan harta pusaka, saudara mara, anak anak...the only thing that would follow us into that dark pit is our iman and amal...

so what is your purpose?

i want the purpose of my blog to coincide with the purpose / goal of my life...i want it to be relevent to what it means to be a human being, what it means to live life...to have no purpose is no joke...to have a purpose pursuing meaningless endevours is no joke either...
